UCFB and GIS will be hosting a third Women in Sport Conference designed for female students who wish to pursue a career within the sport and football industry. The conference aims to explore the different careers available, offer careers in sport workshop and provide a unique insight into the sector.

The Conference will take place on Wednesday 10th March, featuring industry professionals, UCFB students and alumni who will share their experiences of how they got to where they are today. We will also hear from UCFB Careers Coaches who will be hosting an interactive careers in sport session.

Event Overview

Host: Joanna Davison – Future Students Team, UCFB 

Joanna has been working within the Sport and Education sector for 12 years now and has a real passion for ensuring fair representation in the ever changing, exciting world of sport. Starting her career as a PE teacher, then followed by a further interest and focus on Higher Education and how barriers and under representation can be overcome at all levels, opening doors that may otherwise have been closed.

Emilie Hagan

UCFB alumni and Commercial Operations Executive at Wycombe Wanderers Football Club

Emilie recently graduated with a first class honours in Sports Business and Sports Law from UCFB and is currently studying for her master’s is Sports Management.

Since starting UCFB in 2017, Emilie has been part of the event and hospitality teams for a number of high profile events at Wembley, Tottenham Hotspur and Charlton. Alongside her studies, she is now working as a Commercial Operations Executive at Wycombe Wanderers Football Club.

Garnet Mackinder

Investment Partner at Sport England & Professional Rugby Player at Exeter Chiefs

Garnet’s career began working for a small start up sports business before moving to a social enterprise and then on to the RFU. This gave her great insight into the sports sector and how different organisations work successfully. Garnet has had a successful career on the rugby pitch gaining two England 7s caps and played for both Saracens, Wasps and is now at Exeter Chiefs.

Garnet is working as an Investment Partner at Sport England where she assesses funding applications and recommends awards for community sports projects. She is accountable for external funding in the Core Market directorate and ensuring the decision making processes are followed.

Leia Rudge

Current UCFB student

Leia is a 2nd year Football Coaching and Management student at UCFB Wembley and has received the ‘She can coach’ scholarship. Prior to starting university, she focused on gaining coaching experience at different levels of the game, ranging from grassroots clubs who need a stand in manager to volunteering at RTC’s and coaching young children! At UCFB Leia has had a number of different opportunities including, coaching in different academies and schools across London, participating in ethics and disability awareness workshops and more recently, coaching in an elite football camp in California last summer!

Amber Wildgust

General manager at Aston Villa Women

Amber has been in the role since 2017 and has overseen the transformative development of the Women’s side, which has included promotion to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League as well as the transition from part-time football to full-time football.

Main responsibilities include overseeing the operative and strategic direction of the Club, both on a matchday and a day-to-day basis, supporting players and staff in anything they may need on and off the pitch, liaising with and working alongside the FA in driving their ‘Gameplan for growth’ in women’s football, and increasing the overall workforce within the Women’s part of the Club.

Amber has previous experience in coaching for both Leicester City and England, as well as working for Northamptonshire FA as a football development officer.

Laura McCallum

Head of Football Administration & Legal Affairs at Dundee United Football Club

Laura currently serves as the Head of Football Administration & Legal Affairs at Dundee United Football Club and is the Company Secretary of Scottish Athletics. Prior to working in-house, Laura worked for a football consultancy firm offering legal/regulatory advice and representation to football clubs and sport governing bodies across the UK and Europe. She has also worked over a variety of practice areas for various commercial law firms as well as in-house with Glasgow Housing Association.

Further to the above, Laura holds and has held a number of appointments on panels with organisations such as the SFA, SPFL, UEFA, England Hockey, British Curling and the Association of Sporting Directors. Additionally, Laura is a regular speaker at seminars and has also written for a number of leading publications on the topic of sports law.
