Former England captain Alan Shearer was a recent guest speaker at UCFB Etihad Campus where he was quizzed by students about his stellar playing career.

The Premier League’s record goal scorer told students that at UCFB they’ve got a good opportunity to build their career in the sports industry, and that they should make the most of it.

He said: “When you’ve got an opportunity, you’ve got to take it with both hands because you might not get many in your life. So when you do give it your best shot and don’t let anyone down.”

The former Newcastle United striker went on to share his thoughts on higher education in the football industry, saying it’s important for anyone to gain extra education, adding: “I think it’s really important for students to have that education, I also think it’s something that they have to enjoy doing.”

When asked what degree programme at UCFB he might study, Shearer said he wouldn’t mind adding to his media skills by obtaining a degree in sports media, which would come in handy considering he regularly appears on Match of the Day!

He said: “Having been lucky enough to work as a footballer, and then going in to the media thing, I’ve seen a totally different side of it. I never really understood how it worked when I was playing, but now going in to see the production side of things, the editing side of things, all of that… it just sort of happened for me.”

Shearer added that students should educate themselves on social media with how the digital landscape is constantly changing. He concluded: “It’s very different now, social media has changed it a lot - everyone has an opinion.”
