At the 2022 Future Leaders Conference, four of UCFB and GIS’ brightest alumni made their way to St. George’s Park, the home of English football, to speak to third year students about life since graduating in the diverse and dynamic world of sport.
After forming a panel in which each alumni explained what they get up to in their current roles, from coaching at Manchester City to working in finance at the EFL, students were able to engage with the panel personally, picking their brains for any tips and tricks for the daunting job application process that awaits them.
But, as MSc International Sport Management graduate Alun Vaughan summarised perfectly, UCFB and GIS graduates have a niche, but hugely advantageous, edge that helps them stand out in a saturated market. He said: “GIS really helped me in terms of having the opportunity to get a great work placement on your CV whilst you’re studying. I think having that type of experience as well as obviously the education side and the knowledge that you gain from the degree, puts you at a level above when you’re looking for a job.”
With over 90% of our alumni in full-time work six months after graduating, our industry-orientated degrees help ensure students are as prepared as possible for this thriving industry. Grace Scott, Media Officer at Maidenhead United FC, is a prime example of this.
Having started out as an intern at the club in her first year, Grace proved her worth throughout her time at Maidenhead, juggling the placement with her BA (Hons) Football Business & Media degree. It didn’t come easy – few full-time jobs do – but after emailing the CEO herself, Grace managed to land the role she’d been striving towards for three years.
Now, her path is set to pursue her ultimate dream. Speaking at the conference, Grace said: “My main aim in the future is to be the Chief Executive of a football club. My degree has actually helped me a lot with what I’m doing at the moment being Media Officer, but also for my future aspirations. It gives me the background on how a football club works and the different areas of it.”
