Las Vegas is known as the entertainment capital of the world, but it’s contribution to American sport is little known.
That could be about to change though; the Vegas Golden Knights are in contention to make this year’s NHL play-offs and could be on course to lift their first-ever Stanley Cup. One UCFB student recently visited Nevada, and was fortunate enough to witness the Knights’ success first-hand.
Amber McGrath, a BA (Hons) Stadium & Events Management student at UCFB Wembley, spent time working with the Knights and the T-Mobile Arena, where the side play their home games, to learn about the inner workings of a major American sports franchise.
Describing her week in Vegas, Amber said: “I have had an incredible experience working with the Vegas Golden Knights in several departments including: ticketing, PR and communications, digital content, sponsorship, entertainment and experience, hockey operations and with the T-Mobile Arena’s ice hockey event managers.”
She added: “It has given me a valuable insight into the industry and it was great to see how ice hockey runs at the highest level. I hope to bring back what I’ve learnt to improve and develop ice hockey within the UK.”
Amber's work in the US didn't go unnoticed either. Sage Sammons, Director of Communications at the Knights, commented: "We were very honoured to have Amber come in for a few days and shadow our organisation. She was extremely professional."
With the Knights riding high in Western Conference, and NFL’s Oakland Raiders scheduled to move to Sin City in 2020, you can expect to hear a lot more about sport in Las Vegas over the coming years.
