Clearing is an opportunity for students to make sure they get a place on a degree programme that excites them at an institution that will help them achieve all of their goals. It is not limited to those who did not manage to obtain a place at their first choice institution.

Below, UCFB Wembley student Simon Frankland, who’s studying BA (Hons) Football Business & Media, explains how he found the Clearing process.

What circumstances led you to Clearing?

I was working full time in hospitality with the option to progress further but ultimately decided it wasn’t something I wanted to do as a career. I have always been interested in UCFB but just didn’t see it as a viable option whilst working full time. After applying for various roles at football clubs and not getting anywhere, I decided to look into UCFB again.

How did you find out about the Clearing process at UCFB?

I was aware that higher education institutions made places available through Clearing so when I was sure I wanted to go to UCFB I enquired via the UCAS website.

How supportive and helpful was the Clearing process at UCFB?

It was very supportive. The team were very quick to respond to my emails and calls and they kept me informed throughout the whole process.

If someone has just found out about UCFB through Clearing and only have a few weeks to plan the move, what top tips would you give them?

This was the exact situation I was in! Do as much research as possible in to the programmes and decide which one is best suited for you. Also try and sort accommodation as swiftly as possible as well as any bursary applications you may need to complete. UCFB has ambassadors that are also ready to answer any questions you may have about the degree programmes and life on campus.

How has your time at UCFB been so far?

I can honestly say I don’t regret my decision to come here in the slightest. Leaving a secure job and becoming a mature student was a big concern at first but UCFB offers and encourages so much. You really feel welcome and appreciated as a student and they really do everything they can to support you.

If someone is offered a place at UCFB through Clearing and has to make a decision quickly, what would your advice be to them?

Go with your gut feeling! If football and sport is truly your passion, then it’s a no brainer to go for it as long as you fully embrace the opportunity. I had my interview on a Wednesday and moved into accommodation on the Saturday! It’s truly been a life changing year and sometimes the risky and difficult choices can become the best!
