A Second-Year student at UCFB Etihad Campus has taken his skills from university and gained invaluable experience on an eight-week placement with BBC Sport.

Dan Hazell, a BA (Hons) Football Business and Finance student, spent some time working in many departments across the BBC.

What have you been doing during your time at the BBC?

“I started in BBC Sport, moved across to children’s, then did a bit of TV and radio as well.

“I’m working in content finance, which basically means I’m looking at the numbers behind all the programmes you see on TV.

“I’m looking at how much it costs and how much the different parts of the production are going to cost, and also looking at the commissioning side of it as well.”

How has the experience been?

“It’s been amazing, getting the opportunity to work across four different departments at the BBC. It’s a fantastic experience and I’m really glad I chose it.”

What has been the highlight for you?

“Working with BBC Sport. Obviously coming from UCFB, doing a sports degree, that’s been something I was looking to gain a lot from and it really has opened up a lot of potential roles for me in the future.”

How would you describe your time at UCFB so far?

“My time at UCFB so far has been fantastic. First Year was quite tricky because it was all online, but ever since then, meeting lecturers properly, meeting fellow students, it’s been fantastic.

“A lot of what I’ve learnt at university, I’ve actually had a chance to practice it and implement it in real life, so that in itself has been a good opportunity.”

After your experience at the BBC, what would your advice be to future students?

“Make the most of it. It’s been a really quick two years, and I think if you don’t make the most of it, you could get to the end and feel like you could have gotten more out of it.

“I’d say getting some work experience when you want to work in sports is vital. I’ve not worked full time in sports yet, but just in terms of my degree, I can already see the benefits of getting that work experience.

“From what I’ve done at the BBC so far, I know it’s going to be so useful going into Third Year and any future role I have.”
