Few cities in the world can hold a candle to Melbourne and its elite sporting pedigree.

From its world-class facilities to its uncanny knack for hosting unforgettable events, Melbourne is the beating heart of Australia’s sports industry. And whether it’s participating or watching, locals love their sport.

According to Lewis O’Flynn, Commercial Partnerships Manager at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the Australian mantra of giving it a go, offering a platform for a healthy lifestyle and the fact Melbournians are a “proud bunch” are all factors that play a vital role in the city’s success.

Speaking to UCFB, Lewis explained: “Combine these factors with a city that is beautifully laid out with a great mix of open park land and elite level facilities and it’s easy to see why sport plays such an important role in our lives.”

Students will be able to visit UCFB’s global hub in Melbourne next year and can expect to visit the likes of the 100,000 capacity MCG, Melbourne Park and AAMI Park – home to the Australian Open, the Australian Football League and Test cricket. These facilities and more all sit on what’s known as the Melbourne Sports Precinct alongside the Yarra River. Not only is the setting picture-postcard, it also means that Melbourne regularly appears towards the top of the SportBusiness Ultimate Sports City list.

Commenting on Melbourne’s leading facilities and location, O’Flynn said: “It’s an act of visionary town planning that’s seen the development of the precinct at the doorstep of the central business district, alongside beautiful parks, gardens and the river.”

He added: “There is a whole host of other entertainment, fitness and cultural events that go on in the precinct using the extraordinary facilities that are available here, as well as cooperation with our neighbouring venue managers to share ideas for the enhancement of each of our facilities.”
UCFB will be opening global hubs at the MCG, as well New York’s Red Bull Arena, Atlanta’s brand new Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Toronto FC’s BMO Field, giving students and alumni truly unique opportunities within the global sports industry. Find out more.
