One of our students has been looking back on spending the first year of his studies alongside a placement, gaining experience at a National League club.

Matthew Finnigan, a First Year studying BA (Hons) Sports Business and Sports Broadcasting, has spent four months of the season working as a camera operator at Altrincham FC.

Matthew earned the placement by attending a careers event and through networking with the club’s representative.

He said: “Camera work isn’t necessarily what I had my heart set on, however I have found the environment to be really positive and I have really enjoyed my time with the club.”

He added: “The national league is so special because it is a high level of football, yet it is a low enough tier in the English football pyramid to be a field of opportunity for students like myself to find placements, internships or even paid work.

The amount and quality of the opportunities presented are second to none.”

In the sports media industry, UCFB offers many opportunities for people looking for experience, particularly through our partnership with the National League.

This includes media manager at Curzon Ashton and media, marketing and ticketing officer at Maidenhead United. Read more about the work experience and placement opportunities at UCFB here.

Matthew said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at UCFB. So far, I have been challenged and intrigued by my assignments and pushed to succeed.

“I have also been lucky enough to attend a global summit in New York. In my opinion, if you are someone that is looking to work in the sports industry, UCFB is the place to start.”

He finished: “Try everything. As a First Year or Foundation student, you have a long time to figure out what it is you want to do post-degree.

“If there is an opportunity, take it. Your life can only get better from doing so! You never know who you might meet from it or what you may learn.”

UCFB has other sports media-related undergraduate degree courses on offer, including BA (Hons) Multimedia Sports Journalism, and BA (Hons) Football Business and Media.
