UCFB offers a number of unique scholarship opportunities to students of all abilities across a number of disciplines, with scholarships available based on academic and sporting achievements, as well as social mobility among other categories.
Lewis Peers, a BA (Hons) Sports Business & Sports Broadcasting student at UCFB Wembley, was awarded the Alistair Campbell Employability & Enrichment Scholarship. Here, he tells us about how the award has helped him, and shares his highlights from his time at UCFB so far.
How has the scholarship programme helped you so far in your degree programme?
I received the Alistair Campbell Employability & Enrichment Scholarship and it has made an enormous difference to my degree so far. Although COVID has impacted many in-person networking events, the scholarship enabled me to attend the online World Football Summit in November. This allowed fantastic networking opportunities; listening to industry professionals and networking via LinkedIn, which was fantastic.
What made you decide to want to come to UCFB and apply for the scholarship?
I decided to apply for UCFB’s Sports Business & Sports Broadcasting degree programme because I have a passion for presenting and a real love of commentary. Being able to study inside Wembley Stadium – the home of football – still blows my mind to this day. I decided to apply for the Alistair Campbell Scholarship as I believed my credentials fitted the criteria the scholarship was looking for and I knew it would totally enhance my studies. I feel very blessed to have received the award.
How has your time at UCFB been so far?
My course has been everything I hoped it to be and more. Without a doubt, the weekly guest speakers and extensive enrichment opportunities are like no other. From ex-players to sports agents, UCFB get a huge array of people to speak to us and tell their own stories. In addition, the teaching and course content is superb.
Tell us some more about your experience in the media so far, such as work experience, or work you’ve got planned to expand your knowledge and experience?
I have managed to land myself a weekly sports segment on Aspen Waite Radio every Tuesday lunchtime with Hope Ellen. The section of her show is called Sports For Dummies where we discuss all things sport – it has been fantastic. I am also hoping to get involved in my local football club’s media team in weeks to come, depending on COVID.
Do you have any advice for students looking to come to UCFB, in particular those applying for a scholarship?
I couldn’t recommend a place to further your studies more if you have a real passion for sport and are hoping to work in the industry. UCFB has been brilliant and I’m looking forward to seeing what the rest of my degree has in store. I would seriously advise people to apply for a scholarship if they feel they fit the credentials – you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
