Angely Castro, a BA (Hons) Multimedia Sports Journalism student at UCFB, works in the Media team for a grassroots futsal team, Genesis, alongside playing for the club and studying for her degree.

For this year’s National Writing Day, she tells us what she gets up to, why she chose to get involved in sport and why she loves what she does...

As a sports journalism student being involved in the sports industry has been instrumental in my development as a future journalist. Thanks to UCFB, I got introduced to the world of Futsal which I have been playing in a local grassroots club that has so much support for its players - Genesis Futsal. We’ve even been shown on BT Sport, so I had the pleasure of getting involved in photography and filming on these days.

My university has opened many doors for myself as a journalist and I have been privileged enough to be given opportunities that go hand in hand with my degree. I’ve experienced finals, sporting events, tournaments, articles and more. A personal highlight was writing for the Non-League newspaper. As a woman in sport, it’s been rewarding seeing my work published knowing that we may be discriminated against for our love of sport.

My passion for writing has only gotten stronger with the help of my degree and I look forward to being involved in more projects at UCFB.
