University of Cumbria 1-5 UCFB Etihad Campus Men’s 1st

Richard Rose Academy, Carlisle, 01/02/2017

UCFB’s new managerial duo of Ryan Charalambous and Christian Kony got off to a flying start with a thumping 5-1 win over the University of Cumbria.

UCFB flew out the blocks scoring after just three minutes. Midfielder Jack Slinn went on a run from the centre circle before threading a pass through to Mark West, whose quick shot took a slight deflection on its way into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

The second goal came four minutes later. Branden Lilley won possession inside Cumbria’s half, played a neat one-two with Jack Harrison and finished with a placed shot in off the far right post.

West then doubled his tally with UCFB’s third with a cool finish into the bottom left. Captain Tom Divver played a well weighted through ball to flying right back Lewis Embelton who pulled it back for the waiting West.

Cumbria grabbed what proved to be a consolation goal five minutes into the second half with some good team play. Matthew Douglas played a low through ball to Daniel Forbes who placed the ball low to the bottom left of Will Brown’s goal.

Kayode Adewale came off the bench  for UCFB at half time and had an instant impact, scoring after ten minutes. He then added his second and UCFB’s fifth of the game after confusion in the Cumbria defence allowed him to go clean through.

After the game, manager Charalambous said: “5-1 away from home is always a good result. Obviously there’s going to be some teething issues getting the players to play a new system. But it was really good, what we worked on in training came through in spells.”

UCFB captain Tom Divver added: “The game was a success because of the win. It was a good chance for the manager’s first game because they’re bottom of the league but still a threat. We have to be better in the coming weeks against different opposition. We have to work harder in training to implement what the manager’s want us to do. We’ve only had a few training sessions together so it can only get better.”
