Music legend Ian Brown once famously claimed: “Manchester‘s got everything except for a beach”, and whilst it was probably said slightly out of jest, he was absolutely right.

Despite having a population of less than 600,000, it’s quite remarkable just how much students can do across the city.

Here, we’ve put together five of the best things to do in the ‘Capital of the North’, though we must admit, there’s much more that didn’t make the cut…

Sport

Alongside the city’s famous Premier League football clubs, Manchester is packed with a wide range of live sporting action for students to get their teeth stuck into. From county and international cricket at Emirates Old Trafford to elite Ice Hockey and a host of football league sides within a few miles radius, Manchester is a dream location for any avid sports fan.

Away from the pitch, the famous National Football Museum is located in the heart of city and is the perfect day out for any football fanatic.

Live music

Widely regarded as the centre of the UK’s live music scene, Manchester has been the home of some of the world’s most iconic bands, artists and concert venues.

If you look at the UK’s most successful bands and artists, there’s a good chance that they’re from Manchester. From the legendary New Order, Oasis, The Stone Roses and the birth of the Hacienda to chart topping artists The 1975 and Aitch, Manchester has a musical pedigree like no other.

With over 20 premier live music venues, students are guaranteed a live music performance in Manchester almost every night. What better way to wind down after a hard day studying than by watching your favourite band perform at The Ritz or AO Arena?

Hospitality

Like music, you’ll struggle to find a better UK offering than Manchester’s hospitality scene.
Whether it’s the charm of Castlefield, atmospheric Deansgate locks, or the bustling Northern Quarter, Manchester offers a hospitality experience like no other.

Packed with innovative independent bars, stunning luxury restaurants and charming food markets, there really is something for everyone.

Shopping & Leisure

Home to the Arndale Centre and the world famous Trafford Centre, Manchester is a shopper’s dream.

Wherever you are in the city, you won’t be far from a flagship store or a classy boutique. UCFB’s close proximity to Manchester’s centre means exploring Oldham Street’s independent stores or household brands on Market Street are both within easy reach.

In addition to shopping, leisure facilities such as the Printworks and Great Northern Warehouse house restaurants, cinemas, mini golf courses and so much more, meaning there is plenty of activities for you and your classmates to enjoy.

Culture

Despite its industrial heritage, Manchester has reinvented itself as a vibrant, up and coming cultural quarter.

Whether it’s the spectacular architecture, contemporary art exhibitions, or globally recognised Science & Industry and Imperial War museums, there is plenty on offer for students to get involved whilst living in the city.
