One of the most iconic tournaments in sport gets underway on Monday when the eyes of the tennis world switch their attention to the green, green grass of SW19.

As thousands flock to Wimbledon and enjoy their strawberries and Pimms, the serious business on the courts will centre around Andy Murray looking for his second men’s title following his win in 2013.

The Brit will be smarting after being swept aside by world number one Novak Djokovic in the final of the French Open earlier this month, and with both men on either side of the draw the smart money is on the pair meeting again on Centre Court on July 10.

For Djokovic, he’ll be looking to win his third Wimbledon in a row and continue his phenomenal run of form which currently sees him hold all four Grand Slam titles – the first player to do so since Rod Laver in 1969.

Wimbledon favourite Roger Federer, seven-time winner and runner-up the last two years, should not be discounted, and despite turning 35 later this year the Swiss star is still number three in the world.

In the women’s draw, defending champion Serena Williams is the hot favourite again. Like Murray, she’ll be wanting to quickly erase the memory of losing the final in Paris this month following a shock defeat to Spaniard Garbine Muguruza.

British interest in the women’s tournament will be at its highest for a number of years. As well as crowd favourites Laura Robson and Heather Watson, Johanna Konta will be a star attraction after announcing herself to the British public with a run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January. The run meant she was the first British woman to make the last four of a Grand Slam since Jo Durie at the 1983 US Open.

One player who won’t be at this year’s Championships is Maria Sharapova. The Russian, a former Wimbledon winner, is now serving a two-year ban for failing a drugs test.

Giving his thoughts on the two-week tournament, UCFB academic Deepak Trivedi, who is also an international tennis consultant and will be working throughout the showpiece, said:

“The time has come, Wimbledon is here. This is no ordinary tennis event. It’s the one everyone wants to win. This will be another memorable fortnight with plenty of action, interest and sporting brilliance on display. Two UCFB students were successful in their applications to attend the championships next week. Year one student Mitul Samji and year two student Rachel Waters will be analysing the marketing and management of the event as well as focusing on areas such as fan experience. It’s sure to be another memorable experience for two of our UCFB students.”

Tune in next week to follow Mitul and Rachel’s Wimbledon experience.
