The brother of two World Cup winners is hoping to make it a family hat-trick thanks to the business dream of a UCFB student.
Tommy Charlton, whose brothers Sir Bobby and Jack were part of England’s successful 1966 team, has been having trials for the over-60s England walking football team. The trials, which took place at Burnley’s Barnfield Training Centre, which also included double European cup winning former Liverpool full-back Alan Kennedy, were set up by The Walking Football Association – the brainchild of UCFB Etihad Campus student Paul Carr.
Paul, who studies BA (Hons) Football Business & Finance, realised a governing body was needed for the sport while playing the game, and so The WFA was born after his perfect pitch to the UCFB board as part of the UCFB Sports Entrepreneur Award last year.
The WFA has already featured in a Sky Sports documentary and is now playing a huge part in helping to organise the inaugural Walking Football World Cup in 2020. Watch this space to see if a third Charlton can lead England to World Cup glory…
