Dr. Gerald Griggs, Dean of UCFB Etihad Campus

Research your course fully and check it is taking you to where you think you might want to go. Don’t just enrol on the same course as your friend – you are unlikely to have exactly the same plan. Ask lots of questions, find out as much about the course and the university itself before enrolling. Both of these are important for your overall satisfaction and enjoyment.

Find the right place that fits your needs. Do you want, for example, a small and intimate institution? A big city centre location? All these things should be considered, but don’t panic – there is still time do so during the Clearing process and our Clearing advisors can help you make the right decision for you.

Leah Johnstone, Deputy Dean for Scholarship & Knowledge Transfer

Going through Clearing can be daunting, but it’s a great opportunity to take stock and think about what really matters to you. It’s important to pause and consider what sort of environment helps you to do your best, where do you thrive and where do you struggle? Do you like being a big fish in a small pond, or flying under the radar in a larger crowd? Think about who you are and what you need to help you succeed.

After I tanked my AS-levels I spent a long time thinking about those sorts of things before I made a decision about where to go and what to do next – and when I look back I am sure that the headspace I gave myself paid off!

Andrew Paterson, Programme Leader, BA (Hons) Football Business & Marketing

My message for those going through the Clearing process is simple: don’t give up. Keep looking, keep applying, you will find a course and a university that is right for you. You will get there.

When looking at institutions such as UCFB, think of it differently than college. Think of it as a step towards your career. If you do choose to enrol, enjoy everything. Go to all of the classes and enjoy the extra-curricular activities that UCFB offer. Listen to the lecturers and also listen to your peers – you will be with the same people for the next three or four years, so get to know them.

Shana Axcell, Programme Leader, MSc Football Communications & Digital Marketing

To make the right decision in the Clearing process you have to ensure your own values align with the values of the institution you’re applying for. For example, do you have a passion for sport or the industry that surrounds it? This is a good sign your values are aligned with those at UCFB.

It’s important to know your personal brand story and make the decision based on this, which should help you to think about your interests and what’s unique to you.

Simon Mitton, Programme Leader, BA (Hons) International Football Business

In looking at university courses through the Clearing process, do so with an open mind. With UCFB in particular, you will have your fan perspective of football deconstructed. Be prepared to explore ALL aspects of the football ecosystem, from grassroots to the international landscape.

Bear in mind the degrees often go beyond your initial ideas or expectations – students at UCFB will need to develop an appreciation for how football is attempting to be better suited for diversity when building relationships with global audiences and partners. Football, more than ever, is a cultural asset.
