UCFB Etihad Campus was delighted to host the launch of a new book co-written by UCFB director Paul Fletcher and political strategist Alastair Campbell.

Saturday Bloody Saturday sees a struggling football manager in the 1970s take his team to London where the threat of a IRA attack looms large. Drawing on their own backgrounds and experiences – Fletcher a former pro at Burnley, and Campbell’s time in Downing Street with then Prime Minister Tony Blair – the book was written over many months between trips to Turf Moor where both regularly watch their beloved team.

The launch, which took place at the Etihad Stadium, was sponsored by UCFB and a number of UCFB students helped to run and organise the day.

Fletcher and Campbell, who also sits on the UCFB Employment & Enhancement panel, were quizzed by BBC Radio 5 Live host Tony Livesey before then inviting a host of guests to take the mic for an impromptu Q&A session. Guests included current Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton, former Manchester United and Scotland manager Tommy Docherty and the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

Commenting on the launch and the book, described as a football novel and political thriller, Fletcher said: “We’re delighted that people can now finally read this book after all the hard work myself and Alastair have put into it. The launch at UCFB Etihad Campus was a fantastic success, and the students who helped to run the day were brilliant. The event ran like clockwork and was the perfect way to launch Saturday Bloody Saturday.”

Saturday Bloody Saturday is available now. (Orion, £18.99).
