As part of the BA (Hons) Sports Business & Broadcasting course, several UCFB Wembley students had the opportunity to film and edit the footage from a Queens Park Rangers under-23 match against Ipswich Town last month.

With roles ranging from commentator to presenter, the aspiring sports broadcasters were able to experience working in the football industry first-hand as part of the group project, which forms part of UCFB’s unique partnership with the London Championship side.

As one of two producers on the day, student Joe McKenzie said: “We were pretty much in charge of the filming, as well as coordinating the footage with the editors the next day. I set up where the camera shots would take place and directed where people should stand. It felt very professional and in that sense, it was very rewarding.”

Supported by experienced QPR broadcasting staff, alongside programme leader Mick Kelly – himself an award winning television producer – the students were able to learn from the best when producing the video, now available on Inside Rangers’ YouTube channel. While the 4-2 victory for the young Hoops no doubt helped in this, the students clearly impressed in the process.

Nick Golding, who’s role was commentator and co-presenter, told us more about the occasion. He said: “I had the pleasure of interviewing QPR under-23 manager Andrew Impey, who is also a club legend, as well as a few players who shone in the game. After the game, I contributed to a fun post-match analysis – I like to think I brought enthusiasm as this is something I’ve been passionate about for as long as I can remember!”

He added: “To have had this opportunity in my final year alongside other people on my course was a special moment, and is something we can all now proudly look back on. I don’t think many other institutions can say that their students have put a video together for a professional football club, which just demonstrates how lucky we are at UCFB.”
