The 2019/20 season has proved to be a successful year for UCFB’s sports teams so far. This week saw the Men’s Undergraduate Academy become the first UCFB team to be crowned champions this season, whilst several other sides look set to repeat the feat in the coming weeks. Here, we summarise this week’s action.

Men’s Undergraduate Academy 6-0 Chester 1st team – Northern Tier 2A
UCFB’s Men’s Undergraduate Academy were crowned Northern Tier 2A champions after cruising to a 3-0 triumph over Chester. Goals from Casian Anghel (3), Henry Limpitishi (2), and Will Ozono ensured the Academy secured the title and a third successive promotion with two games to spare.

Commenting on the triumph, Operational Head of Academics at UCFB Etihad Campus, Mike Walsh said: "It has been a great achievement to win the league at this stage of the season and also have maximum points. We have dealt well with the step up following last year's promotion, and with competing against much bigger universities who have excellent sports provision.

"This has been down to recruiting well in the summer to bring in some good players from professional clubs, the excellent coaching and support from the physio, and the strength and conditioning support that has featured alongside the weekly analysis we've provided to the players.

"The professionalism of the academy from both staff and players has seen us excel this year; we now focus on the cup and as soon as the season is over we will start to plan for next season in Division 1."

Men’s 2nd team 6-2 Chester: Warrington 1st team – Northern Tier 4C
Joe Lally’s second team moved to within a point of league leaders Lancaster after putting six past Chester’s Warrington campus. Josh Winthrop scored twice, whilst Rhys James, Denzel Kuzakwawo, Ryan Deery and Eshan Greer all notched a goal apiece. UCFB have the opportunity to leapfrog Lancaster in the division when they face off next week.

Bolton 2nd team 0-2 Men’s 3rd team – Northern Tier 6A
Goals from Dean Janahi and Dan South propelled the Men’s third team to the top of the Northern Tier 6A table. The side now need four points from their remaining two games to secure the league title.

Men’s 4th team 2-0 Salford 3rd team – Northern Tier 6C
The fourth team are a point clear at the top of Tier 6C after strikes from Tom Foran and Kassim Jebrin ensured UCFB emerged as 2-0 winners, despite the best efforts of a spirited Salford outfit. Whilst the league championship is out of their hands, if second place UCLan slip up in their remaining fixtures UCFB could well be crowned champions.

Manchester Met 1st team 1-0 Women’s 1st team – Northern Tier 2A
Despite producing a gutsy performance with just ten players, the Women’s team fell to a 1-0 defeat away at MMU.
