The MA Football Coaching qualification is designed for those wishing to deepen their understanding of Football Coaching practices. The programme provides opportunities to engage in different aspects of football coaching including areas such as coaching philosophy, tactics and strategies, reflective practice and performance analysis. It is ideal for current professionals working within the Football industry who prefer a more flexible mode of delivery instead of a purely campus based programme.

By having the opportunity to learn from the comfort of their own home or workplace, programme participants will be able to gain a further qualification to enhance their career prospects in a format that offers flexible hours and the chance to dictate their own work-life balance to fit around other commitments.

This programme is designed for those who already work, or aspire to work, in the sports industry, and offers the flexibility to allow participants to gain a Master’s degree qualification around their busy lifestyle.

This programme is a Blended degree, meaning the majority of your studies will take place online through UCFB’s dedicated Online Hub. However, there will be the opportunity to learn on-campus at either UCFB Wembley, London or UCFB Etihad Campus, Manchester, for ten days, in January and June of your programme studies.

UCFB will be looking to deliver the on-campus elements of this blended degree at UCFB’s global study hub locations from 2021.

My favourite aspect to working in sport is that every day is different. The people that you meet, the players that you meet and the impact you get to have on their journeys, for me it’s really valuable to know that you can look back and think you had an impact on them.

Modules

Semester 1
Applying Football Principles - Tactics & Strategies

This module will teach students how to critically analyse the tactics and strategies of association football exploring the different moments of the game and principles of play. In order to develop advanced tactical knowledge students will explore different styles and systems of play and associated tactics and strategies. Drawing on the student’s own coaching experience and context the student will explore the efficiency of their own coaching practice and subsequently explore any knowledge gaps for further development. The module will help students design their own ‘game model’ of performance and integrate tactical periodisation into the effective planning for team performance encompassing a holistic approach to practice. Students will be expected to critically explore the challenges faced in implementing a game model approach within their own context.

Applied Reflective Practice: Philosophy in the Coaching Process

This module will explore personal coaching philosophies, the impacts this has on coaching practice and the challenges faced in demonstrating these in current coaching environments. Students will examine how their personal coaching philosophies have developed as well as how these are demonstrated in practice. In addition, students will propose any areas of personal and professional development needed to be undertaken in the progression of their coaching careers.

Semester 2
Analysis of Football Coaching Practice

This module will work on a real-life case study from your own coaching context, creating a fully considered and justified coaching development plan. As a practising coach, you will be expected to draw upon previous knowledge and skills gained and embed new theoretical knowledge drawn from other modules. As part of the module, you will be expected to integrate theory into practice in the development of the player(s) or team. You will then implement your plan to demonstrate the competency that you have achieved in applying appropriate theory into practice and the evaluation and impact of decisions made. Furthermore, you will critically analyse your own coaching practice and methods employed throughout.

Match and Performance Analysis in Football

This module will enable you to develop knowledge, understanding and application of complex concepts within match and performance analysis in football. You will acquire a detailed awareness of contemporary theory, technology and industry expertise which is applied within football contexts to enhance knowledge, inform decision making interventions and improve performance.

Semester 3
Applied Professional Coaching Project

The applied professional coaching project offers students the opportunity to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge developed within the Master’s programme in a relevant, practical work context environment. The coaching placement learning enables the student to apply techniques of reflective learning in order to ensure that learning is based upon a sound theoretical basis and a robust practical application. Although the initial responsibility for finding a suitable placement is in the hands of the student, students will be supported and guided in finding a placement. Workshops are available to facilitate the search process and the student will have a supervisor appointed to monitor student progress.
