The event, sponsored by UNITAR, United Nations, Shoosmiths, Pluggable AI, Teamworks and Hudl, brought together senior leaders from sport, government, law, business and international organisations to explore how sport can be used as a catalyst for diplomacy, sustainable development and international collaboration ahead of a new generation of global sporting events.

Bringing together global leaders in sport diplomacy

Hosted by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the World Cup Diplomacy Summit focused on the growing role sport plays beyond competition, examining its influence on international relations, governance, innovation and social impact.

The opening sessions explored several key themes shaping the future of the sports industry, including:

• Policy, governance and integrity in driving ethical and sustainable sport
• Sport as a diplomatic tool to strengthen international relationships
• Sport as a platform for social and economic development
• The evolution of fan engagement through digital communities, personalisation and responsible commercialisation

These discussions highlighted how collaboration between academia, governing bodies, governments and industry leaders will be essential as major international sporting events continue to grow in scale and influence.

Collaborative workshops to shape the future of global sport

Following the keynote discussions, delegates took part in a series of cross-sector breakout workshops, working together to develop practical solutions across four strategic themes:

VSI Executive Education helps develop landmark sport diplomacy white paper

One of the most significant outcomes of the summit was the continued development of “Sport As a Platform for Diplomacy and Dialogue,” a landmark white paper being produced collaboratively by VSI Executive Education and UNITAR.

Drawing on the expertise shared throughout the event, the publication will provide an evidence-based framework for organisations looking to harness sport as a force for diplomacy, sustainable development and international collaboration.

The white paper will include:

• An executive summary outlining key opportunities, challenges and examples of best practice in governance, ethics and commercialisation.
