Former Leicester City captain Wes Morgan recently joined UCFB Manchester as guest speaker for the 2024-25 academic year Welcome Week.
Wes, who studied a Master’s degree at UCFB after his retirement from playing football professionally, offered advice and guidance to UCFB students taking the first steps towards their dream career in the sports industry.
As he spoke to UCFB about his playing career and life and career since retiring, Wes reminisced about the iconic 2015-16 Premier League-winning season for Leicester City.
Wes Morgan was captain of the Foxes, who were famously 5,000-1 odds to win the Premier League, and went on to make history with one of the greatest underdog achievements in the history of sport.
He described winning the league and lifting the world-famous trophy in front of his friends and family at the King Power Stadium as the greatest moment in his career, before saying that nearly ten years on, the achievement still hasn’t really sunk in.
“I’ll be honest, it still feels surreal,” he said. “When I talk to people and speak about the accomplishment, sometimes I wonder if it really happened. It still feels like a bit of a blur, sometimes.
“Then you get reminded, you see the pictures and videos and you realise it did happen, I was there, I did get my hands on that trophy.
“To be a part of that team is an unbelievable feeling.”
He went on to say whether he thought an achievement on that scale would ever happen in sport again.
“Probably not in my lifetime,” he said. “It’s hard to say. I think something similar will happen again, but I’m not sure I’ll be here to see it.”
After his retirement from football, Wes attended UCFB to take a degree in MSc Sports Directorship, one of UCFB’s many executive education courses.
