Izzy Christiansen on the importance of education for young athletes

Former England international and Manchester City midfielder Izzy Christiansen has been offering UCFB students career advice as they strive towards their future roles in football and sport.

Since hanging up her boots, Izzy has seamlessly transitioned into a successful career as a Sky Sports pundit while also coaching Manchester City Women’s U21 side.

At a recent industry networking event, Izzy reflected on her journey from professional football to broadcasting, the preparation behind live television and why education remains essential for aspiring sports professionals.

Having represented clubs including Manchester City and Everton, Izzy believes the growth of women’s football has opened more career opportunities than ever before.

“I was really proud to become a professional at a time when women’s football was just on the cusp of becoming huge,” she said.

“The game has completely erupted in this country, and the amount of jobs that have come from that growth is fantastic. I’m one of those people who’s benefitting from the fact the game is in such a great place.”

Although broadcasting wasn’t always part of her plan, her passion for football naturally led her into the media industry.

“I started working for BBC Radio 5 Live while I was still playing and things developed from there,” she explained. “I’ve always been passionate about football and health and fitness, so I’m really lucky that this new career path has come from my playing career.”

Now a familiar face across Sky Sports, Izzy revealed that presenting and punditry involve far more than viewers see on screen.

“Preparation starts three or four days before a game,” she said. “You’re constantly keeping up with football news, studying statistics, analysing performances and working with producers to decide the key talking points.

“During the game you’re analysing everything that’s happening, and afterwards you’re ready to discuss the result, the performance and what it all means.”

Alongside her work in broadcasting, Izzy coaches Manchester City Women’s U21 players, many of whom balance elite football with their studies. She believes education is invaluable for athletes and anyone pursuing a career in sport.

“I’d encourage any young athlete to gain an education alongside what they’re doing,” she said.

“Sport gives you so many transferable life skills and studying provides another focus away from the intensity of competing. The two complement each other really well.”

Her advice for aspiring sports media professionals was equally clear.

“It all starts with passion,” she said. “Work hard at the skills you want to develop, whether that’s presenting, reporting or commentary. Communication is key, practise as much as you can and be brave enough to create your own opportunities. If you love the sport and keep improving your craft, you’ll give yourself the best chance of succeeding.”
