Media Manager at Salford Red Devils

UCFB graduate Harry is now plying his trade in rugby league, earning a role as media manager at a Super League club.

After completing an undergraduate degree in BA (Hons) Multimedia Sports Journalism with UCFB, he gained his role at his local team, Salford Red Devils.

Speaking about his role, Harry said: “I’m in charge of social media, video, written content for the website.

“I also deal with the press and any press requests for interviews with the players or accreditation for the games.”

“Working at a Super League club is pretty special. You don’t realise the magnitude of it until you’re actually involved in these events. You actually have to sit down and reflect how far you’ve come.

He added, talking about working within the sports industry: “People don’t realise how much work you actually have to do. Especially me as a social media manager, I’m sure others will agree it’s not a 9-5 job. It’s a 24/7 job.”

Many of Harry’s cohort have gone on to very successful careers in the football industry, but Harry talked about how pleased he is to be working in a rapidly growing sport.

“Rugby League is at such a pivotal point of its development,” Harry said, “and social media is becoming more and more important.

There are elements to UCFB’s course that you only know because the lecturers are actually in the industry. The lecturers genuinely care about where you end up.

“I’ve worked some massive events in brilliant stadia, meeting incredible people. I think the experience of working in sport completely trumps any profession, particularly if you’re a massive enthusiast about sport.”

Harry also spoke about his time at UCFB: “After I’d left university, I needed some advice and spoke to Colm Griffith. He talked me through it, so what more can you ask for?

“He’s always touching base on LinkedIn. So, the lecturers genuinely care about where you end up.”

He finished: “I’m a believer that you’re a product of your environment. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people and people who are going to push you is massively important.”
