Knowledge Exchange Partnerships

Collaborating with Industry

Our Knowledge Exchange Partnerships connect academic expertise with industry practice to co-create solutions, enhance professional development, and drive innovation across sport and society.

Our partnerships ensure that research informs practice and that professional practice shapes research agendas. This two-way exchange strengthens the relevance, quality, and reach of our work – benefiting partners, students, staff, and the communities we serve.

The Football Association

FA Club Leadership Programme

A core practice within knowledge exchange activity, is co-creation of educational experiences by academics and industry professionals. UCFB and The FA have collaborated to launch of a pioneering new initiative – the FA Club Leadership Programme – aimed at empowering and developing leaders at every level of grassroots football across England. The programme will support current and future leaders of community football clubs, delivering high-impact training to enhance their strategic, operational, and behavioural leadership capabilities. This initiative comes at a critical time as the game seeks to build stronger, more sustainable clubs that are embedded in and reflective of their local communities.

CertHE in Football Development

A further product of our knowledge exchange partnership with the FA is the CertHE in Football Development. The course curriculum was developed in collaboration with the FA, resulting in an educational programme relevant to real-world needs, directly equipping students with industry-relevant skills. The course provides an opportunity for existing and aspiring football industry professionals to develop critical understanding and application of the various constituent components of football development at grassroots and elite levels in a variety of industry contexts.

The English Football League

Research Partnership

UCFB and the EFL have developed a three year research partnership, focused around coach education and development. UCFB academics are working closely with the Youth Development department, supporting policy and strategy, and advising on professional development opportunities for coaches in the EFL academy system.

This partnership allows UCFB academic experts to provide research solutions for the EFL, and in turn gives students the opportunity to support these projects live from the classroom. To date, our year two students have supported data collection, analysis, and development of recommendations. Students have been given the opportunity to interact with, learn from, and present to, significant figures from the EFL coaching hierarchy.

Sky

Sky Internship Week

Our knowledge exchange partnership with broadcasting giant Sky centres around an innovative ‘Sky Internship Week’, providing an unparalleled opportunity for two standout UCFB students to gain hands-on experience within Sky’s Content Services team.

This week-long internship is designed to offer students a deep dive into the world of broadcasting, and allows these students to bring their academic knowledge into an industry setting to share with colleagues. Students on these internships will develop essential skills and industry knowledge, while offering academic perspectives on the challenges their industry team face.
