UCFB students gained valuable industry insight during a recent guest lecture led by financial services experts, as part of a Masters Managing Global Strategy session.
On Tuesday, April 14, Peter Lee, Lecturer in Strategy and Management at UCFB, welcomed Vinay Vyas and Mike Falvey, partner and co-founders of Argus Pro, to deliver a session titled “What Football Clubs Can Learn from the City of London.”
The workshop explored how principles from financial services regulation can be applied to the evolving landscape of football governance.
Mike Falvey brings extensive experience from both the public and private sectors, including his former role as Director General at HMRC. His career spans private equity and advisory work across highly regulated industries, with involvement in early discussions surrounding the development of the Independent Football Regulator (IFR). He continues to provide senior-level guidance on financial and regulatory matters.
Vinay Vyas contributes deep expertise in banking investigations and financial crime. He played a pivotal role in the landmark case against Credit Suisse, which resulted in a $2.6 billion fine; one of the most significant enforcement actions in transnational legal history. The case marked a turning point for financial transparency, contributing to lasting changes in Swiss banking practices.
Drawing on their experience, the session highlighted how the UK financial services sector, widely regarded as the most regulated industry in the country, has successfully balanced growth with robust stakeholder protection under the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Students explored how similar frameworks could support football clubs as the IFR takes shape.
Over the course of a three-and-a-half-hour interactive workshop, students examined six key lessons that football can learn from financial services regulation. The session provided practical, real-world insight into how clubs can prepare for upcoming regulatory changes, demonstrating that effective compliance can be achieved without unnecessary complexity.
However, the discussion also highlighted a pressing concern: many of the 116 clubs across the Premier League, English Football League, and National League may not yet be fully prepared for the incoming regulatory framework. With implementation on the horizon, the need for awareness and readiness is growing.
Argus Pro continues to support organisations navigating regulatory change, including within football. The firm has developed resources such as a white paper on football regulation, a dedicated online hub, and a free IFR readiness self-assessment tool designed to help clubs evaluate their current position. A forthcoming software solution aims to further simplify ongoing compliance for clubs of all sizes.
The introduction of the IFR represents a significant step in safeguarding the heritage of English and Welsh football, ensuring that clubs operate in the best interests of their fans and communities. As highlighted during the session, with the right preparation and approach, clubs can embrace these changes with confidence.
Reflecting on the event, students described the session as highly engaging and insightful, leaving with practical knowledge that will support their future careers in the sports industry.
UCFB extends its thanks to Vinay Vyas and Mike Falvey for delivering an informative and thought-provoking session.
