Two UCFB students have been talking to us about why they are gaining sports industry experience alongside their studies in ice hockey, as opposed to football.
Caitlin Barrett and Matthew Finnigan both work in the media team at Manchester Storm Ice Hockey, an Elite Ice Hockey League side based in Manchester.
Caitlin, a BA (Hons) Sports Management student, works as the club’s content manager and social media strategist.
Meanwhile Matthew, who is a broadcast and media executive at the club, studies BA (Hons Sports Business and Sports Broadcasting.
Speaking about the sport, Caitlin said: “In ice hockey, everybody knows everybody because it’s quite a small world because it’s quite a niche sport in the UK.
“I love working in ice hockey because it’s so fast-paced. Until people have watched it, they can’t understand what it’s all about.
“You never get bored of watching it. It’s so fast-paced and physical, and working in social media, you can get across that content.”
Matthew then said, when asked about gaining industry experience in ice hockey: “With ice hockey, there’s so much room for growth, especially within this country, so if we get more people, you can become part of a community which is really special.
“This opportunity has really benefitted me. Personally, you always wonder if something that’s not football is right for you, and whether or not you’re stepping too far out of your comfort zone.
“If you step out of your comfort zone, you’ll learn something new about yourself.”
Caitlin then added to that: “I would encourage students to get out of their comfort zones and go into different sports.”
UCFB has a wide range of industry partners from across the sports industry, offering amazing opportunities to our students alongside their studies.
