Parents and Carers Guide to Clearing

Why Use Clearing?

Clearing is no longer the scary grey area in the higher education, its becoming an increasingly common route to university.

Your young person can apply through clearing if:

  • They have had a change of heart with their firm university
  • They have not applied through the main UCAS cycle but now want to go to university
  • If they meet the entry requirements of our courses

What can I do to support?

Ahead of results day, begin to research the university they are interested in. Key things we suggest to look at are:

  • Modules – what are they going to be studying on the course
  • How will they be assessed – you can find this on our website under course specification
  • Entry requirements – do their predicted or achieved grades meet the requirements
  • Extra Curricular activities – what can they do alongside studying? Whether this be sport, extra qualifications or placements.. how can they build their graduate employability. Take a look at our Careers page for more information.

We know during results day, things don’t always go to plan and can be quite stressful for students, so try and make decisions with a clear head and plenty of information!

I applied through Clearing and I’ve enjoyed every single minute at UCFB. My academics have been so supportive!

Will accommodation be available?

We will support all students who have received an offer through clearing to get accommodation, whether this is at our UNITE partner accommodation sites, or another accommodation building in the same area. Visit our Accommodation page for more information.

Is it too late for Student Finance?

The answer is no! Students can apply for Student Finance as soon as they receive an offer in clearing. Student Finance England will work as quickly as possible to process their application ahead of starting university, however there may be some delays in receiving maintenance loan the closer to enrolment a student applies.

Can a student in clearing still apply for scholarships or bursaries?

Yes! We have a second deadline in August to allow for clearing students to still receive the same opportunities and finance support as students who applied in the main cycle. Visit our Scholarships and Bursaries page for more information.

When does semester start?

At UCFB, our Welcome week begins on the 22nd September with academic lectures commencing from the 29th September.
