Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe took the time to offer advice to UCFB’s coaching students who are aiming for careers in football coaching and management.
Howe, who has earned promotion from the Championship, League One and Two, said that getting out and coaching is the best thing any aspiring manager or coach.
“My advice for any young coach is to coach” Howe said. “That sounds silly, it sounds basic, but it’s so important.”
He then went on to say that coaching at lower levels, including coaching children, can provide crucial experience for any future coach.
He added: “I was really fortunate to get to coach really young children from the age of eight to 16, and the best thing I did was coach them.
“It was really good for me to do that, and I progressed through and learned so much in those early days, so when I was coaching professionals, I was able to use that body of experience.”
He finished: “I’d say to coaches – nothing can replace it, nothing can substitute it. You’ve actually got to get on the grass and do it.”
