UCFB students gain sports industry experience at Women’s Rugby World Cup

Several UCFB students gained quality industry experience at the recent Women’s Rugby World Cup, learning plenty on the job about elite-level women’s rugby.

The students covered a wide range of work on their placements and internships, and were able to get a front row seat as the world’s best female rugby players contested the tournament on English soil for the first time in 15 years.

One of the students who was a workforce intern at the tournament was Ketsia Kayembe, a BA (Hons) Sports Business and Sports Law student at UCFB.

Ketsia applied for the role through the UCFB JobTeaser and after the interview process, was offered the position.

Speaking about her role at the tournament, she said: “My role as Workforce Intern saw me working and supporting volunteers, staff and other stakeholders during their shift time, making sure that they were checked into their shifts when they first arrived on venue, making sure they were fed, answered any queries they had and checking on their wellbeing on both matchdays and non-matchdays.

“Events can be demanding and long hours is a given, so it was essential that both staff and volunteers were looked after during their working days.”

She added: “I also had the opportunity outside my role to carry out other roles during the World Cup. I carried out the trophy onto the pitch and also was a flag bearer in the Fiji v Scotland match.

“It was so interesting seeing how time specific everything was and missing one second can have an effect on the whole production!”
