Manchester United legend and current Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick recently spent some time with us to talk us through his career in football.
The five-time Premier League winner spoke about his playing career, during which time he earned 34 caps for England and was regarded as one of the top midfielders in English football.
At Manchester United, he was pivotal to winning 17 major honours, including a Champions League and a Europa League, being named the Red Devils’ Players’ Player of the Year in 2012-13.
Looking back on his illustrious playing career, Carrick talked to us about his favourite formations to play in, players he wish he could have played with.
He also mentioned the highs and lows of his career, calling the 2008 Champions League Final in Moscow a personal favourite.
Since going into coaching and management, Carrick has proven himself very popular with the Middlesbrough fans, where he has taken up his first managerial role.
Taking them from the threat of relegation to League One to hopes of automatic promotion to the Premier League, Carrick is now being regarded as one of the best young coaches in England.
Carrick spoke to us about advice given to him by Sir Alex Ferguson, which he would pass on to anybody wanting to work in the football or wider sports industry.
He said: “Work hard and push yourself. You’ve got to it yourself, you can’t expect anyone else to do it for you.”
Carrick then went on to describe his career in one word, simply saying “dream.”
