Several of our media students were lucky enough to take a tour around Stockley Park, the home of VAR and numerous sport studios, including the ITV Sport studios.

During the visit, students were shown around the studios, learning about television production in sport, as well as meeting producers and receiving talks on how operations are run.

The students met with one of the producers at EFL Productions, who told them much about match editing, including TV graphics and replays, which they then tried out for themselves.

They were also given a talk on the history of IMG Studios, where the Premier League’s video assistant referee has been run from since 2019.

Another tour they were taken on was one of the ITV Sport studios, which included having a look around one of the editing rooms.

The trip took place only weeks after students were taken around the BT Sport studios during a live UEFA Champions League broadcast, also organised by lecturer Tom Skippings.

One of the students who attended was Zakaria Anani, who is in his first year of studying BA (Hons) Multimedia Sports Journalism.

He said: “Probably the biggest takeaway is how much goes on behind the scenes when producing a football match for TV.

“There were so many different roles that needed to be done, and it was really eye-opening to see how it all works.

“I'd never considered going into TV production before, but I'm definitely interested to look into it after the trip!

He finished: “Say yes to anything that comes your way - any opportunity you can get is a way to network and gain experience.”
