A UCFB graduate has been talking to us about his role as an assistant social editor at a national newspaper website.
Kirshon Wilkins, who studied BA (Hons) Multimedia Sports Journalism at UCFB Wembley, now works as an assistant social editor at the MailOnline.
As part of his role, Kirshon assists the social media lead in editing MailOnline social feeds which involves covering live events and breaking news on social media.
He also works closely with reporters and editors across the Daily Mail newsroom on social media projects and best practices.
He said: “I’m delighted to have had nearly three years’ experience in the news field and a year and a half in sports media respectively, and UCFB are a big part of that.
“I am pleasantly surprised to be in my position today but grateful for the chances given to me which I won’t be taking for granted.”
During his time at UCFB, Kirshon gained plenty of writing experience, working for such organisations as ReadEverything and VAVEL.
He also earned the position of media assistant at Aldershot Town alongside his studies at UCFB.
“I loved my three years at UCFB,” Kirshon said, “and feel like I couldn’t have been given better tutors or classmates elsewhere!
“I really liked the industry experience offered there and the teachings were very useful and I still use teachers’ tips today!”
He added, talking about his time at UCFB: “You learn how to carry yourself in a newsroom, how TV production works, and trips to stadia to write reports and articles.
“I don’t feel like you get those frequent experiences anywhere else. UCFB is the place to be if you are looking for that first foot in the door.”
He finished: “Never giving up is so key to your success.
“You will hear a lot of nos from all the emails and job applications you fill out but through advice, perseverance and good fortune you will get your chance in the industry.
“Good contacts is another key piece of advice. Get phone numbers and emails from people at UCFB and any opportunities you gain and save all of them.
“Remember you are at UCFB because you have potential and skills good enough for wherever you want to go so keep that in mind always!”
