UCFB looks back on decade-long partnership with American soccer side

For almost a decade, UCFB’s relationship with a United Soccer League Two side in New York State has seen students gaining quality sports coaching experience overseas.

Students from both UCFB Wembley and UCFB Manchester have earned paid coaching roles at Long Island Rough Riders on summertime trips to the United States.

Gaining roles across multiple departments of the club, students gained experiences across both men’s and women’s senior teams, as well as academies, youth teams and school clinics.

Furthermore, the opportunities do not end with the summertime experience, with the Rough Riders also offering the chance for full-time work on graduation.

UCFB alumnus Adam Allaway now oversees the recruitment drive at the Rough Riders.

Speaking about the relationship, Adam said: “As an organisation, we really appreciate all the support we get from UCFB throughout our recruitment trips; it is always productive and enjoyable.

“Dedicating full days to interviews and on-field assessments continues to be extremely beneficial to both the students and ourselves and it is great that we can bring over students who are strong fits for our programme.”

It is an exciting time for Long Island, who recently announced they will be building a new stadium and entering a professional team in the MLS from 2027.

Simon Fitzjohn, Senior Employability and Career Planning Manager at UCFB Wembley, believes the relationship will go from strength to strength.

Simon said: “Many of our students dream of working and even moving to the USA, so our relationship with the Rough Riders is a fantastic opportunity for all.

“The selection process ensures it is our very best students that get to go, building the UCFB brand as a place of coaching excellence.

“With the Long Island organisation expanding over the next few years that should present even more opportunities for UCFB students and we look forward to continuing to work with them going forward.”
