One of UCFB’s media students gained some invaluable industry experience this summer, covering the London Youth Games Finals Festival.

Scott Hargreaves, who has just completed his First Year studying BA (Hons) Multimedia Sports Journalism, captured content for the games’ social media channels.

The festival took place at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, home to the London 2012 Olympics.

More than 5,000 young Londoners, from all 33 boroughs of the capital, competed across 12 different sports from aquathlon to volleyball.

Scott said about his experience: “We took up a position on the track and took photos and videos of the competitors.

“After the cycling finished for the morning, we walked around the event and saw swimming, athletics and basketball competitions going on.

“After lunch we went back to the VeloPark to get more road cycling content, this time for the boys and girls 10km races. We positioned in different spots to get a variety of shots.

“At the end of both events, I took some pictures of the medal ceremonies.”

Scott got the opportunity to work at the event after a meeting with the UCFB Employability and Careers Planning Team, who suggested the festival would suit him well for his desired experience.

When asked about his time so far at UCFB, he added: “I like the opportunity to not always be studying the academic side of the subject but also being given the chance to do the practical side and then being able to apply it in the industry with work experience opportunities.”

He finished: “Choose opportunities that interest you and are similar to what you want to do in the future. They give you great experience and make the opportunity much more enjoyable.”
