A UCFB course leader is the latest guest in our ‘In The Hot Seat’ podcast series, as he talks us through his career in media and as an academic.
Andreas Charalambous, UCFB Wembley’s course leader in BA (Hons) Football Business and Media, is the latest guest to appear on our podcast series, discussing all the work he has done in the media world, both inside and outside of sport, which has brought him to UCFB as a course leader.
Andreas spoke to us about how he started in the media world, studying before going into television and film, while always having that passion for sport.
Now, in his role as a course leader in BA (Hons) Football Business and Media, he spoke about the importance of the study area.
“It’s one of three media degrees that we teach here. When I speak to prospective students, I tell them the BA (Hons) Multimedia Sports Journalism and the BA (Hons) Sports Business and Sports Broadcasting degrees are very much focused for specific career pathways, obviously, to become either sports journalist or a sports broadcaster.
“What football business and media does, it sits in between where it’s not quite focusing on one particular career pathway so we look at a variety of the media landscape. It could mean a variety of things, and we have look at a more varied approach you know across the wider net we look at how sports journalism works broadcasting uh you know public relations marketing, etc.”
He then went on to speak about how it feels to be teaching within media, an area he’s been so passionate about his whole life.
“For many years, I’ve been teaching media, you know, film, I’ve really enjoyed doing that. And to be able to teach that in the sports context as well was just like another great opportunity.
“And what do we mean by media these days? It could mean anything. Advertising, marketing, radio. Those who are interested in a career within media, it’s not an individual, you’re not working on an individual basis. You’re very much collaborating with other people.”
He finished by offering advice for prospective students, wanting a career in any field of sports media, whether it be journalism, broadcasting, social or any other specialised area.
“There’s a lot that you can do now before you’ve even come to UCFB,” he said, “if you’re interested in writing about football, match reporting, for example, that’s something you can do now.
“Go watch your local football club, start a blog. The media technology now, it’s virtually free. It doesn’t cost you anything to do. Most of the technology you need, you carry around in your pocket every day anyway in your smartphones.
“You can go out there and create your own opportunities. You know, start a blog, start your YouTube channel. Get all that experience.”
