Dean’s Progression Scholar on the benefits of receiving a UCFB scholarship

“I would definitely recommend applying for a scholarship, even if you don’t think you’re going to get it.

“There’s nothing you can lose. There’s a number of experiences I’ve had which allow me to open my eyes and see how big the world of sport is and how I can be a part of it.”

These are the words of UCFB student Dylan, who has been talking about the benefits of gaining a scholarship, and how it has enhanced his student experience.

Dylan Boorer, a MSc Football Communications and Digital Marketing student, has received the Dean’s Progression Scholarship.

Previously, Dylan graduated from UCFB with an undergraduate degree in BA (Hons) Football Business.

Speaking about why he wanted to continue his sports industry education, he said: “The BA (Hons) Football Business course was great for me because it allowed me to look at different departments in football such as media, finance, law and marketing.

“This was a great course to be able to find out what my specific interests were and narrow it down to where I’d like to work in the future.

“I was able to go to Miami, Toronto, Silverstone. All of this, added together with the lectures and seminars, I knew that I wanted to carry on at UCFB.

“So I decided to stay at UCFB because of the amount of opportunities that it offered me.

“I knew that doing a Master’s degree would make me stand out more. The Master’s has allowed me to do something a lot more specific and something that I want to do, so I thought it was going to benefit me much further in my career.”

He then went on to speak about why he applied for a scholarship upon applying for the Master’s course.

“When I applied for the scholarship, I never thought I’d get it. When I received it, I was absolutely over the moon. It’s helped me financially with my tuition fees. I’ve been allocated a mentor to help me through the year.

“It also shows a lot of people to put their trust in me, which has enabled me to work harder and make them proud.”

Having experienced both undergraduate and postgraduate study at UCFB, he said: “I think my favourite part about UCFB is being able to come into Wembley Stadium or Arch View House and be able to talk about football every day, and learn more about different departments of the sport.

“I think the whole way that UCFB works, from the lectures, the seminars, the different lecturers that you get to meet, the guest speakers, the opportunities; it’s definitely worth having a look at.”

He finished by offering advice for those specifically thinking of applying for a scholarship to enhance their UCFB journey.

“I would definitely recommend applying for a scholarship,” he said, “even if you don’t think you’re going to get it. There’s nothing you can lose.

“There’s so many benefits. Again, financially, being allocated with a mentor. And I think it’s a really proud moment which will really push you harder through your Masters.”
