UCFB student looks back on Bolton Wanderers Industry Insight Day

UCFB student Daniel has been looking back on one of our industry insight days, which took him and fellow UCFB Manchester students to Bolton Wanderers.

Daniel, a BA (Hons) Football Business and Marketing student, was given the opportunity to attend the event organised by UCFB’s dedicated Employability and Career Planning Team, who offer students the chance to network, attend events and explore work placement opportunities across the sports industry.

See what he had to say below about the visit to The Toughsheet Stadium.

Bolton Wanderers F.C. is a historic professional football club based in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. Founded in 1874 as Christ Church FC, the club adopted its current name in 1877 and became one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888.

Known as “The Trotters,” Bolton Wanderers has a proud tradition and strong connection with its local community.

The club enjoyed its greatest success in the early twentieth century, winning the FA Cup four times, including the famous 1923 “White Horse Final,” the first FA Cup final held at Wembley Stadium. Bolton has also spent many seasons competing in the top division of English football and was a regular presence in the Premier League during the early 2000s.

Today, Bolton Wanderers plays its home matches at the Toughsheet Community Stadium and competes in the Third Tier of English Football, League One. Despite periods of financial difficulty and relegation, the club remains an important symbol of resilience and pride.

With loyal supporters and a rich heritage, Bolton Wanderers continues to play a significant role in English football history. Its ambition to return to higher divisions reflects its enduring determination and future potential for supporters everywhere today and beyond and always moving forward.

On the 25th February 2026, with UCFB, I had the opportunity to visit the stadium for an industry insight day, after already visiting in January to watch the Whites beat Burton Albion 2-1 with a 90th minute winner from Sam Dalby.

Kickstarting the day, we were welcomed into the Club McGinlay’s Suite and had an introductory talk from Danielle from ‘The People’s Team’ (The HR Department). Following that, we heard from Paul, who is the Chief Strategy Officer at the club. He spoke to us about his time at the club, including being a key figure in the signing of Jay-Jay Okocha, as well as what his typical day looks like.

Paul then took us on a tour of the stadium. Walking through the hotel, we first of all went outside the stadium to visit the Nat Lofthouse statue. Lofthouse spent his entire professional career at Bolton from 1946 to 1960.

He scored an incredible 285 goals in 503 appearances, making him the club’s all-time leading scorer. His most famous moment came in the 1958 FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, where he scored both goals in Bolton’s 2–0 victory over Manchester United. Lofthouse also represented the England national football team, earning 33 caps.

He remains a legendary figure and symbol of loyalty and excellence at Bolton Wanderers. Following that, we made our way into the media room, where new signings and the current manager, Steven Schumacher, would be to carry out interviews.

The next stop on our tour was to the very top of the West Stand, informally known as ‘Row Z’ amongst fans. This is where journalists would sit to observe and write their match reports. From a bird’s eye view to a pitch side view, walked out of the Bolton tunnel and onto the side of the pitch.

From here, we could stand in the technical area of where Bolton’s manager would be to give out tactics. Going back inside the stadium, we checked out both the home and away dressing rooms.

There was a very clear difference between them with the away dressing room giving off Sunday League impressions, the home dressing room however, was very nice. The dressing rooms were the final part of a brilliant and insightful tour.

After the tour, we heard from Jordan, who is the Head of Finance at Bolton. Having only been at the club for around a year so far, Jordan has come into a struggling club financially and has been key in steadying the ship. Jordan answered many questions, including questions about his role, his background and also about his day-to-day operations.

Following a very generous buffet-style lunch, we concluded the day with Chris, the Head of Revenue and Growth at Bolton. He spoke about his experiences and what led him to working at the club. Chris then set us a task to conclude the day.

We were tasked with creating a new membership program to launch straight away, with real-life restrictions added to add realism to it. After a group discussion, we came up with a scheme to present to Chris and received some key feedback.

Thank you to UCFB and everyone at Bolton Wanderers for organising and executing a really insightful day. I’m really looking forward to more experiences and opportunities in the sports industry.
