A UCFB student is spending his time away from the classroom getting vital sports industry experience at a Football League club.

Now a business intern at League Two side Barrow AFC, BA (Hons) International Football Business student Carrick Galbraith will be gaining experience alongside his degree studies at UCFB.

Carrick was able to earn this experience through JobTeaser, and now works on the business side of the club throughout the week and on matchdays.

As part of his role, Carrick deals with match sponsors, companies and individuals in the build-up to a match, and has a variety of roles on matchdays including helping the media team, helping out with team sheets and working alongside mascots.

He is also involved in securing shirt and stadium sponsorships for the club, which he called ‘one of the most rewarding tasks out there when it comes to working within a football club.’

Speaking about his role, Carrick said: “This is very good experience for me as this applies to all football clubs, so further down the line, I will hopefully be able to apply these skills to future work.

“Overall, the internship is a business and commercial one so the main focus is there, however marketing and media is also a significant area of the club I am gaining knowledge in as well as the general management and operations.”

He added: “Being able to be at a professional EFL club whilst studying is amazing, and to be honest quite surreal.

“I am able to be in and amongst the players and everyone working at the club, gaining skills and developing key relationships and connections.

“I am very lucky to have this opportunity with a League Two football club and I am excited to see what the future holds.”

Carrick went on to speak about his time so far at UCFB’s Manchester Campus.

“I am loving my time at UCFB,” he said. “To be able to study my favourite thing which is football and learn and talk more about it every single day is dreamy.

“The thought of a future working within a Premier League club is what I’m working towards so every day I am driven to this, and UCFB is the best place to do this.

“UCFB stands out from other universities due to its unique opportunities. Not just with the degrees, but also the extra-curricular opportunities with guest speakers, connections in the industry and internships like my own with Barrow AFC.”

He finished: “Go for it, follow your dreams, as corny as it may be.

“But if you’re a football lover then studying football is incredibly rewarding and something I am sure you will enjoy as long as you work hard and do your best to look at football through a different lens.”
