Richard has a background in Sports Science having attained a BSc (Hons) in Sports & Exercise Science from London South Bank University, an MRes in Advanced Instrumentation Systems from University College London and a PhD in Medical Engineering from Queen Mary University of London. Following a 10 year career in Sports Medicine at Bart’s & The Royal London School of Medicine & Dentistry, Richard was awarded an MSc in Management of Intellectual Property from Queen Mary University of London. He also undertook the IPReg foundation professional exams concomitant to the MSc for a separate award of PGCertIP in Intellectual Property Law. Subsequently, Richard then was awarded a Graduate Diploma in Law (with Distinction) from the University of Westminster.

Richard has previously taught at undergraduate and postgraduate level in biomechancis, biomedical engineering and musculoskeletal physiology and has extensive experience of instrumented gait analysis of clinical populations including children with Cerebral Palsy. He was also manager of the Human Performance Laboratory at Queen Mary University of London and oversaw all biomechanics related research work in the lab. With a career change in to law, his interests lie in commercial aspects of law, including contract law, intellectual property, EU, competition law and sports law.

Outside of academia Richard has been a competitive powerlifter, specialising in the bench press, for over 20 years, has won 12 British titles and has, to date, represented Great Britain internationally at 17 European and World Championships in the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF).
