Clearing is an opportunity for students to make sure that they get a place on a degree programme that excites them at an institution that will help them to achieve all of their goals. It is not limited to those who did not manage to obtain a place at their first choice institution, and UCFB is proud to count a number of its leading students and graduates as those who’ve come through the Clearing process.

Here, UCFB Etihad Campus student Izzy Keighley, who’s studying BA (Hons) International Football Business and works as Head Coach at the Manchester United Foundation, explains how she found the process…

Take us through your thought process behind going through the Clearing process.

As a mature student, this was the only option for me to apply for a degree course as it was a matter of discussing my work experience and qualifications rather than relying on UCAS points. It was also a fairly last-minute decision made a few weeks before the new academic year, so it suited me that this is a very efficient process.

Tell us about your experience of Clearing at UCFB.

The whole process was really straightforward, and everything is outlined clearly on the UCFB webpage for Clearing. It only took one phone call to the admissions team to secure an unconditional offer which was fantastic, plus the application came back in just a couple of days.

What is one thing you wish you knew before you went through Clearing?

I honestly wish I knew how simple the process was and how much UCFB recognise other work experience as being valuable enough to secure an offer.

Did you feel adequately prepared for starting the course in the September?

The communication from the admissions team then passing over to the academic team was great, and you are signposted to lots of ways to access support and ask questions throughout.

Do you have any top tips on how to make the Clearing process as smooth and stress-free as possible?

It helps if you have a copy of your CV and academic or work qualifications with you when you call the Clearing hotline as you’ll need to provide this information to the admissions team. Also, apply for Student Finance as soon as you accept an offer rather than waiting until September because it has a longer processing time.

Are you pleased with your decision to study at UCFB?

I can’t imagine studying anywhere else that would have given me the same industry-specific support and opportunities. I was also awarded a scholarship that has funded further qualifications towards becoming a Chartered Management Accountant and allowed me to attend the World Football Summit, which you wouldn’t find elsewhere.

What advice do you have to anyone looking to go through the Clearing process?

Go for it! If you’ve been out of education for a few years or maybe don’t have the right qualifications it can seem like an intimidating process, but there is no scrutiny or judgement and UCFB will simply do everything they can to present you with feasible options and encourage you that it is possible to still pursue a degree.
