Speaking about how the original work experience opportunity came about, Charlie said: I was looking for some work experience over the summer and enquired with the company as I knew some friends from my course were working with Fresh Press. I got a quick reply from the business director and started work the following week which was really exciting!”

Both students are responsible for sourcing and publishing topical news stories within sport.

Abdullah further delved into what his role with the company involves. He said: I wrote as a volunteer until the start of this year and then an opportunity came about to become an alternative sports content executive on a part-time basis.

“I cover a wide range of sports, including boxing, cricket, golf and many more. My job at the company is to ensure that all the news regarding alternative sports are covered on a day-to-day basis. I source, write, edit and then publish news articles, with my main aim being to create engaging and interactive content.”

Abdullah went on to speak of how his job with Fresh Press has helped him with his degree course. He added: “Learning how to do things in class and then implementing them in the real world has really boosted my confidence and my written proficiency.

“Reading how to do something and actually doing it are totally different. Fresh Press has helped me to bridge the gap between the two.”

Charlie and Abdullah then spoke of their career ambitions and how Fresh Press are providing a platform for them to achieve their goals.

Charlie said: Hopefully when I graduate I can continue my work within the journalism field, which has always been a huge ambition of mine.”

Abdullah added: “Writing about sport is something that I am hugely passionate about and to be doing that for a living is a dream come true. I would love to travel the world through my job of covering sport, especially football.

“My role at Fresh Press is gearing me up for that because it is a huge publishing organisation. Having my name on the articles puts me out there to the world. Having this company on my CV is a huge stepping stone for me going into my future.”
