Following the success of the Kick It Out Women’s Raise Your Game conference at UCFB Wembley in March, a number of female students decided to get together to create the Women’s Society.
BA (Hons) Sports Business & Coaching student Georgina Slawinski, vice president of student involvement at UCFB Wembley, helped to organise the first meeting for the group. In her own words, she describes how it went and the plans for the society’s future…
The Raise Your Game conference follow-up event was a great success. The main reason why I decided to host this event was to get a Women’s Society group started for all the ladies at UCFB Wembley, after being inspired by the high profile female speakers who spoke at the conference.
Being vice president means that it’s my role to look after the society groups we have here at UCFB. For me, creating a Women’s Society was all about creating more of a family environment on and off campus.
During the meet-up, it was great to get to know the students in attendance and see everyone mingle with each other, especially with students from different programmes. The pizza, prosecco and music was a really nice touch to make the event feel more like a meet-up with a bunch of friends, simply to have fun.
At the event I set everyone the task of writing down what they would like to see at UCFB for women and the feedback was really positive and insightful. We also had a vote for what event we would like to see happen first, with the decision made to have a movie night after Easter. I hope this will be the first of many and also the start of bringing everyone together and creating that community environment the UCFB SU wants societies to feel.
We are looking forward to the growth of the Women’s Society and we hope the numbers will continue to increase. I’d like to thank everyone who attended the event, both our female students and lecturers. You make my role as your vice president very rewarding and made all the hard work in the run-up to the event all worthwhile.
