Starting university is an incredibly exciting time for most eager teenagers craving to break free from home, but it’s important not to lose sight of all the planning that needs to be done in order to feel prepared on the day.

To make things a little easier, we’ve put together a list of 10 things it’s vital to remember to bring along, to ensure you have the best possible start and don’t have to keep popping home for more bits in Fresher’s Week

Room:

1. ID (Driving License, Passport), Purse, cards, cash

2. Duvets, Duvet Covers, Sheets, and Mattress Protectors - don’t assume these are given to you!

3. Pillows and Pillowcases

4. Toothbrush / Toothpaste, Shampoo, Conditioner and Shower Gel – and anything else for your nightly routine.

5. Pictures, posters (favourite footballers?), fairy lights, and anything else to make your room feel homely and inviting.

6. Resources for your degree – any books you’ve bought and work you’ve done, filing systems, stationary and so on.

7. Clothes (including a mix of smart, casual, sports,), shoes (the same applies), coat hangers, shoe racks.

8. Bags – be that practical rucksacks to take to lecturers and seminars, clutch bags for a night out and gym backs if that’s your things.

9. Cleaning products – surface cleaner, bleach and room spray will all help to keep your new room sparkling throughout the year.

10. Laundry Basket – last but not least, otherwise your floor will inevitably replace it.

On top of this, we’ve put together a separate list of items specifically for the kitchen. This should be easier to pull together, and how complicated it gets it probably dependent on how complicated you want your cooking to get (why not stick to pasta like most students)…

1. Plates and Bowls

2. Cutlery, including chopping knifes.

3. Glasses and Mugs

4. Saucepans and frying pans

5. Tea towels and oven gloves (if your accommodation has an oven).

6. Chopping board

7. Bin bags

8. Tupperware

9. Grater and peeler

10. Pizza wheel – a necessity for any pizza-loving students afraid of using any of the above.

While these lists are a good starting point for any soon-to-be students, it’s also worth checking what you’re accommodation already includes – you may have to bring less if you’re moving into somewhere outside halls of residence, for example.
