UCFB is delighted to announce that former Arsenal and Football Association vice-chairman David Dein, and ex-Hull City manager Mike Phelan, will be talking to students this week as part of the Executive Guest Speaker Series.

Dein, who was responsible for bringing Arsene Wenger to England in 1996, and Phelan, who was also assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, will appear at UCFB Wembley and UCFB Etihad Campus on Tuesday 7th February and Wednesday 8th February respectively.

David Dein

Dein is best known for his former role as vice-chairman at Arsenal. In his time at the club he was responsible for hiring Arsene Wenger, before the pair signed the likes of Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira, leading the club to one of the most successful periods in its history.

He later became vice-chairman of The FA and was instrumental in the appointment of Sven Goran Eriksson as manager of the England national team in 2001 – England’s first foreign coach.

Dein was also the president of the G14 group of European football clubs between October 2006 and May 2007 and has sat on various committees within FIFA and UEFA including UEFA’s Club Competition Committee and Executive Committee.

Mike Phelan

Having performed at an elite level as a footballer, coach and manager, Mike is a highly respected figure in football circles and is probably best known for his vastly successful time under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

As a player he spent most of his 16-year professional career at Burnley, Norwich City and Manchester United, earning an England call-up in 1989.

Immediately moving into football management upon retirement, Mike took up a role at Manchester United’s Centre of Excellence in the summer of 2001 and was promoted to first team coach. Appointed assistant manager of Manchester United in 2008, Mike enjoyed five seasons of trophy-laden success until Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. After leaving United, Phelan became assistant manager and then manager at Hull City, playing a vital role in their promotion to the Premier League for the 2015/16 season.

Mike is also a member of the UCFB Employability & Enhancement Panel, and brings a wealth of experience to help create a dynamic learning environment for students, building their knowledge of the industry, career prospects and providing invaluable insight from a coaching perspective.

David Dein will appear at UCFB Wembley in Pitch View West at 11am on Tuesday 7th February. Mike Phelan will be at UCFB Etihad Campus in the Commonwealth Suite at 10am on Wednesday 8th February.
