One UCFB graduate is preparing for a life changing trip to Kenya where she’ll be volunteering as a sport coach and teacher in the schools of Nakuru.
Alice Kelk, who left UCFB in 2016 after graduating from the BA (Hons) Football Business & Media programme with a first class degree, has taken up the opportunity with Notts County Football in the Community to visit the town and its children, around 100 miles north west of capital Nairobi.
A life-long fan of the League Two club, it’s an experience Alice couldn’t let pass by. She said: “This opportunity is a double whammy for me – being able to influence children that aren’t as fortunate as us through football, while wearing the shirt of the team I grew up to love.”
With the trip set to take place in October, Alice, who now works in UCFB’s Complementary Curriculum team, is undertaking a series of fundraising initiatives to help finance the trip including her flight, visa and vaccinations. Chief among her fundraising is taking part in the Great Manchester Run at the end of May.
Alice said: “Throughout this whole journey I would like to challenge myself in every way possible and this is the first one I will encounter.”
When Alice makes the trip later this year, she also hopes to take out with her a collection of football equipment and hopes UCFB students and staff will be able to help.
Alice added: “I would greatly appreciate any donations to help me along with my journey, it would mean the world to me. If anyone would like to donate any old football boots or shirts for me to take out to give to the children, please do not hesitate to get in touch.”
