UCFB Wembley recently played host to 20 student law teams from around the country taking part in the second UK Sports Law Competition.
The competition, in conjunction with Shulmans LLP law firm, was held inside the iconic Wembley Stadium, and welcomed the best and brightest from the country’s leading law schools, competing against each other in a variety of sport law scenarios, including the negotiation of commercial terms of a sponsorship deal and resolving a dispute between a football club and a partner.
Two UCFB teams took part in the competition, with one finishing in an impressive sixth place. Sheffield Hallam University were the overall winners and took home UKSLP Trophy Shield, along with prizes including a work placement at the Rugby Football Union and tickets to the Sports Resolutions annual conference, Staying Ahead of the Game.
Students had to impress a panel of judges made up of experts from across the sport industry including Stuart Tennant, legal counsel at the RFU, Melissa Hague, head of governance at Basketball England and Mark Ives, head of judicial services at The Football Association.

Although I was a supporter of all competing teams on the day, as someone loyal to the county I call home, it was great to see Yorkshire bring home the trophy. Sara Hale, programme leader for BA (Hons) Sports Business & Sports Law at UCFB Wembley added: “We were extremely proud to be named the Academic Partner for the competition. There was an extremely high standard of entrants, with all of the students wanting to take home the coveted title.”
She added: “The great thing about the UK Sports Law Competition is that it allows students to apply all of the skills that they gain in the classroom to real-life scenarios. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and no doubt learnt invaluable lessons and skills.”
