Global Institute of Sport (GIS) is proud of our involvement in an academic article published, arguing the need for reform of professional rugby union and specifically, Gallagher Premiership rugby clubs.
The article, ‘Introducing a model of business sustainability in English professional rugby union,’ was written by GIS associate lecturer in Sports Business and Law Andy Golding, in conjunction with his PhD Supervisors, and sports finance experts, Dr Daniel Plumley and Dr Rob Wilson from Sheffield Hallam University.
Dr Plumley and Dr Wilson are also visiting professors on the GIS' MSc Sports Directorship, under the course leadership of Dr Ian Lawrence at our Etihad and Miami campuses.
The article supports the findings of the recent government report which highlighted ineffective governance of the Gallagher Premiership and concluded that the financial situation of Premiership rugby clubs is not sustainable.
In the article, the authors argue that unless the custodians of the game take note of the need for reform, there is the possibility that the growth of the sport may be stifled or individual clubs may cease to exist.
Andy Golding said: “The article provides much needed research into the key characteristics that need to be considered if rugby union is to become sustainable as a business.
“This is particularly pertinent given the recent demise of Worcester Warriors RFC and Wasps RFC and the growing concern that there may be others to follow if subsequent action is not taken”
The publication is available in Managing Sport and Leisure, ‘a referred journal that publishes high quality research to inform and stimulate discussions relevant to sport and leisure management globally.’
