UCFB offers a number of unique scholarship opportunities to students of all abilities across a number of disciplines, with scholarships available based on academic and sporting achievements, as well as social mobility, among other categories.

Momodou Salou Jallow, a BA (Hons) Football Coaching & Management student, was awarded the Elite Athlete Scholarship. Here, he tells us about how the award has helped him at UCFB, as well as detailing his time at UCFB so far.

How has the scholarship helped you so far?

The scholarship has provided me with financial stability, so at the end of my three years at UCFB I will not be in as much debt as I would have been without it. It has also helped me to believe in myself as I know I have the ability and skills to pursue my career without having the stress of money, so I am now able to focus on my education.

What made you decide to want to come to UCFB and apply for the scholarship?

I decided to come to UCFB as I liked the idea that it was based in and around the Etihad Stadium, which gave it more of a football feel, and it was unlike any other higher education institution in England and Northern Ireland. UCFB is also in an area where there is plenty of public transport available, and an airport for when I want to go home to Northern Ireland. I applied for the scholarship because I had reached all my personal goals and had been doing well with my football, so I believed that I had the abilities to get the scholarship. From then it has given me a higher profile as it shows that I am a well-respected, mature student.

How has your time at UCFB been so far?

My time at UCFB so far has been brilliant! I have met many wonderful people, who I believe will be in my life for many years to come. The lecturers are very good, they are able to explain information in a way which helps me to understand it. Some of the information is new to me and so it can be hard to grasp, but with their help I have been able to gather a better knowledge. Manchester is also a wonderful place to live with a good vibe and friendly people, and a lot busier than Belfast! I’m definitely beginning to call it home now.

What aspects of UCFB have you enjoyed the most?

I have thoroughly enjoyed myself both in the classroom and out on the football pitch. It has opened my eyes to what the roles and responsibilities of a coach and a manager are, which has encouraged and motivated me to work hard to achieve my dream job. I have also loved taking part in coaching a team of U12s for their evening training and matches. It has enabled me to develop the skills I’ve learnt in the classroom and put them into practice.

Any advice for students looking to come to UCFB, in particular those thinking of applying for a scholarship?

I would highly encourage prospective students to apply to study here as it will be the best experience of their life and one that they will not forget. From the start I have made many memories that will stay with me throughout my life. Regarding students applying for the scholarship, I would say to them that they should believe in themselves and their abilities because everyone is different and each individual can bring their own unique skills to UCFB. It is an opportunity not to be missed!
