The transferability of skills learned at UCFB means it’s not just the football and sport industries where graduates go to work.

Tom Johnson, who graduated with first class honours from the BA (Hons) Football Business & Marketing degree programme, has realised his dream of working within the music industry since leaving UCFB.

He’s set to begin his role as Promotions Coordinator at Pure Records, a record company in Barnsley, a role he found through the Sheffield RISE Graduate Scheme after completing a tough three-stage interview process.

During an employability seminar at UCFB, Tom was set a task to complete an unscripted elevator pitch to the rest of the group, specifying what career he wanted to pursue, where he pitched his dream of working inside the music industry, specifically within marketing.

It was during the seminar that Tom was notified of the role at Pure Records by one of the guests brought in to speak to students.

His six-month internship in Yorkshire will see Tom cover roles such as digital and social marketing, website development, promoting album releases and tours, and both B2B and B2C communications.

An elated Tom said: “The seminar prepared me for the interview process, and those sessions proved to be very useful in me securing the internship. The role was over applied for, and I was contacted by RISE to look for alternative jobs as this role was heavily sought after by graduates and the chances of success were slim.

“However, my passion for music, marketing and finding my dream career pushed me to do my absolute best during each application stage. I believe my drive, determination and knowledge of the role and industry played a huge part to me being the successful candidate.”

Tom’s success demonstrates the transferability of skills learned at UCFB, with degrees designed for students with ambitions to excel inside and away from the sport industry.
